a week ago today… it was a HOT Sunday afternoon & I went to a college group kickoff event for Crossroads Community Church (not my home church but one that I used to be actively involved in). It had been awhile since I had seen everyone so it really nice to see everybody again! After awhile of hanging out & talking, someone mentioned that people were playing mud football... I LOVE mud football! but since I didnt know we were playing ahead of time I was not able to bring appropriate clothing attire. BUT I searched in my car & I was able to come up with some clothes that I could wear! I was excited- everything was set except for then I realized I didnt have any shoes... all I had were flip flops which wouldnt last more than a second in all that mud. I was bummed but I changed back into my normal clothes & decided I would just have to watch instead.
so I watched for a bit & it was fun but I wanted to play SO BAD!! then I realized that no one else was wearing shoes... & two of my friends were gonna go play barefoot as well so I figured 'what the heck! it should be fine'. so I went back to my car and changed back into the clothes I had found earlier & I walked with excitement as I approached the field.
as soon as I stepped onto the field I was greeted by several muddy hugs & friends being like "oh Angela you have something on our face... let me get it for you" as they proceed to wipe mud all over my face lol also followed by other friends flinging/throwing mud at me just for fun. so needless to say within a matter of a few minutes I was fully covered in mud.
anyways I was assigned to a team & as we were lining up to play the QB was like, "alright Angela I am gonna hand it off to you" -in my head I was think "oh great this should be interesting" but instead I was like "sweet! ok lets do this!" so the ball was snapped as the QB yelled "hike!" & then the football was handed off to me...
it was my moment of glory :) I looked at my opponents & decided to run left. I ran and dodged my opponents as I had one guy blocking for me & I before I knew it I was running into the end zone!! TOUCHDOWN!! I scored!! & now my team was up by one point! WOOHOO! my teammates gave me high fives & some friends cheered for me from the sidelines. It was great.
but as i was running i felt something sharp hit my foot- I just thought it was some rocks or maybe a stick or something & no big deal. but as we were abt to kickoff to the other team and continue to play I noticed my foot was still hurting pretty bad so i lifted it up to see if something was wrong & I noticed that blood was pouring out from underneath all the mud covering my foot- I thought 'uh oh this cant be good..' so then I was like, "umm.. guys, my foot is bleeding" so I hobbled off the field leaving little blood marks where I walked & again looked at my foot & by this time was foot was completely covered in blood. Everyone started to kind of freak out & they piggy backed me into the machine shed. They got me a chair so I could sit down & started to wash my foot off with some water bottles. Thankfully there was a girl who was practicing to be a nurse who was there so she took care of me & cleaned my foot as best as she could. After looking at my cut she looked up at me & said,"this cut is pretty deep, we are gonna have to take you to the ER to get stitches.." I thought to myself, 'seriously? stitches? ugh! why do these thing always happen to me..' & then I realized, 'great I get to go to the ER completely covered in mud!!' & I couldnt help but just laugh at my situation.
Apparently my mom didnt realize I was play mud football when Hannah called her to tell her what had happened so her face was pretty priceless as well when she first saw me as she entered lol. Once my parents arrived, Danica & Hannah left for a little while so I decided to text some of my closest friends & my brother & sisters to let them know what had happened. Almost every text I received back started with "OMG!! or "WOW" or "oh my goodness!!" & ended with, "Ang, you are so crazy!" lol
Later on, Han & Danica returned with a neon yellow poster saying "WE LOVE YOU... & your dirty foot!! hope you feel better soon", flowers, a balloon, baby wipes, fuzzy socks, starbucks frappuccino, ritz cheese crackers, a bag of resee's peanut butter cups & other random goodies!! it was so sweet!! I am so richly blessed with amazing friends!
After waiting for an hour or two, my name was finally called. haha every nurse I came in contact with was like, "should I even ask.. or what happened to you?? or do I even want know?" one nurse was like, "I have never seen a woman covered in mud before!!" followed by "are you a tomboy or something?"
Then they began to try to clean out my cut but apparently there was just too much dirt in there.. what had happened was that because I kept playing for a little bit mud was filling inside my cut & the blood had clotted around it... so finally the doctor decided that she was just gonna have to numb my foot & try to scrub the dirt out. Thankfully, I was laying on my stomach so I could see anything but by the look of my mom's face it looked pretty gross & psychologically just thinking abt what was happening to my foot was a really weird feeling. After awhile the doctor decided that she had done all she could & there was no way that she could get all of the dirt out- so she decided to leave the cut partly open & gave me only two stitches in fear of infection.
oh & earlier while I was soaking my foot in some chemicals or something to try to clean my cut out my mom & I started to try to clean myself off using baby wipes & wet paper towels. Later a nurse brought out some towels & a bucket of soapy water for us to use & I was finally able to make myself clean!! well at least clean-er :) also the nurses were SUPER nice & brought me an extra pair of scrubs so I could get out of my muddy clothes!!
haha so they gave me crutches & a boot to protect my foot but it was WAY too big! the nurse was like "oh my gosh! your feet are so small! what size do you wear a 5?" & I was like, "yep!" then she was like, "really?? i was just kidding!!" haha it made me laugh.
after spending a total of 5 hrs in the ER I was finally able to go home- lol that definitely was not how I had expected to spend my Sunday afternoon/evening!! but such is my life...
*moral of the story: NEVER play mud football barefoot!! even if everyone else is doing it! :)
